The Olympus OMD E-M5 is an Updated Classic
Olympus Bring their Pedigree into the Digital Age
Some designs are timeless. I have often hankered after a classic Ford Capri, with its great lines and sexy look. Sitting in those bucket seats and staring out over the huge bonnet would instantly take me back to the 70s. However, I am not sure I could cope with no power steering, a choke, three gears and an 8-track stereo. I would have to strip all that old stuff out and replace it with state of the art, modern technology.
And so Olympus present their new OM camera. It looks very like their classic OM series with it’s simple lines and easy to use dials, but they have stripped out the old technology and replaced it with digital. The OM-D E-M5 is a brand new camera in a retro case and it feels great. Because it retains the old style dials, it is easy to use for anyone one familiar with an ordinary SLR. It is awash with settings and options, which are accessible via the touch screen. This camera bridges the gap between the Compact System range and the best digital SLRs. It is a four thirds size with a viewfinder.
Olympus are renowned for their image quality and the OM-D certainly doesn’t disappoint. Even when shooting at high ISO its images are are bright and punchy. The autofocus is very fast and the 5-dimensional image stabilizing system will help to keep your pictures sharp. With 16 mega-pixel files, shutter speed max of 1/4000th and up to 9 FPS, it can turn its attention to most needs. There is a good selection of lenses available too. It has a vast array of customizable options which can seem overwhelming at first, but offer the serious photographer some great flexibility. It shoots full HD video.
Of course, the difference between the old OM system and the new is the lack of the mirror lens. The electronic viewfinder still gives the traditionalist the feel of the old faithful. It gives full 100% view and allows you to check the Art Filter Effect, color temperature and exposure levels in real-time. The back screen tilts up and down to allow shooting at different heights.
