Photography – Lighting For Wedding Photography

by Evan Scott

Lights is a vital ingredient for wedding photography. Unlike other parts of professional photography, weddings require all kinds of lighting, all on the same day, for example window light, landscape lighting, bounce lighting, and multiple electronic lighting.

Newly Married CoupleEach type of light have their drawbacks but in addition offers opportunities for creative work. To be able to appreciate fine lighting, study the works with the master painters.

Notice what sort of artists were mindful of lighting and lightweight direction; shadows fall since they would in the naturally lit scene. They understood the problem in trying to make a two-dimensional. Increasingly, electronic flash equipment, which consists of automatic thyristor circuitry, is being used as the easy way to photograph a wedding.

Some photographers boast they can shoot a whole job at f/8, allowing the flash unit to accomplish the work. Unfortunately, this kind of lighting is really noticeable and unappealing.

Both the broad kinds of lighting discussed here are: existing light and electronic flash. Existing light includes natural light and the light sources encountered, such as lamps or chandeliers.

Electronic flash or strobe lighting includes single and multiple lighting setups, together with umbrella as well as the other bounced lighting.

Existing light. Capturing in existing light that are consistently well exposed is not an simple task.

As a result of great color variation in the bride’s white gown along with a groom’s black tuxedo, cameras with built-in light meters won’t suffice and therefore are rarely utilized in wedding photography.

A reliable way of measuring light is crucial. There are two types of exposure meters available: those who measure incident light, and those that measure reflected light.

An incident-light meter measures the number of light that falls onto a white dome that collects the sunshine. Even lighting condition including shade, the reading will likely give a proper exposure.

Reflected-light meter measures the power of light coming from the subject. Critical users of sunshine meters have a tendency to prefer this kind. The meter is pointed toward the subject from the camera position or in the line from you toward the niche.

To photograph with window light, place the subject near to the window and searching toward it. Direct sunlight creates harsh shadows and highly contrasting highlights and shadow areas and unless some type of fill light is used, the shadow side from the face will have insufficient illumination. Fortunately, more diffuse shaded light is usually available.

The news that two Reuters photographers have rigged up a set of robotically controlled D-SLRs so that they can shoot from previously impossible positions at the forthcoming Olympics should not really surprise anyone. Firstly these events are a focus for innovation and advancement and secondly, with the whole world shooting, a different shot from a different angle can help you stand out from the photographic crowd.

The reuters robot built by fabrizio Bensch for the London Olympic gamesDigital photography has changed the way pictures are taken and so changed the skills required. Time was when a photographer had to trust his skill and judgement, knowing that he was restricted to a single opportunity to take the shot before the action passed him by. Now, with multiple frames per second, remote firing and digital manipulation, a photographer has many opportunities to get the shot and his skill set has changed accordingly.

The ingenuity of Fabrizio Bensch and Pawel Kopcynski is undeniable (see their blog here). A case can certainly be made that at these world events that every possible angle should be covered. But is the person controlling the robot actually a photographer? When I worked in a national newspaper many years ago, one of my jobs was to record the news programs. Every day I would tape the lunchtime and evening news bulletins on my trusty Betamax and then review the tape and grab any pictures that we might need. Of course the pictures weren’t my copyright. I wasn’t actually the photographer, I was merely grabbing stills from the moving images on my screen. It may be argued that, because the events are live, the act of grabbing is more like pressing the shutter than reviewing a tape. But does it require photographic skill? One of the problems with digital cameras and their almost infinite number of frames is that many photographers now just hose down what is in front of them, assuming that something in there will be usable. In doing this, the photographer has changed from a skilled craftsman to an image recorder. Whilst Reuters Photographers can quite rightly claim to be amongst the best photographers in the world I am not sure that a couple of guys with joysticks, monitoring a dozen screens and synchronizing their Canon’s 14FPS bursts to an athlete hundreds of feet away are actually photographers.

fabrizio Bensch fixing the Reuters robot for the london olympic gamesIn my darker moments on newspaper picture desks I wondered if it would be easier to bypass photographers completely and strap a camera and earpiece to a trained dog that could be controlled directly from the office. I wonder if, by utilizing this technology, we aren’t merely replacing the dog for a robot.
