The D3X: Nikon Unleash the Beast
The D3X is Supremely Competent in any Situation
The Nikon D3X is from Nikon’s top-spec camera range and is one of the best digital SLR cameras around. It has an almost indestructable build quality and can shoot to a resolution of 24.5 Mega-pixels. The ISO range extends from 50 through to 6400. The built in eyepiece shutter enables greater metering accuracy and the menu buttons offer an almost endless range of customization options. Time was, this level of image quality or speed of focus came in a static medium format studio system. The D3X gives the same quality in a chunky, but portable and versatile, Magnesium alloy body. 7 Frames per Second is a very decent speed and the autofocus is quick and efficient.
With Nikon’s superb autofocus system, the Nikon D3X is a professional camera for photographers who expect the best as standard.
The Nikon D3X Image Quality and Handling
Whilst a large number of the systems of the D3X design are also in the cheaper Nikon D3, in some areas it is undoubtedly better. The D3X really excels in image detail at low sensitivities. The image output can only be described as stunning. The superb JPEG engine delivers a level of sharp detail that beats all competition. If image detail is your priority, the D3X has to be your number one option. And it can still shoot five frames per second in continuous shooting, or smaller files at seven frames per second. Reassuringly chunky, you are left with the impression that the Nikon D3X will outlast you. Obviously designed for monopod or tripod use, the weight should not put you off. The menu is easily accessible and allows almost endless customization. Whatever your speciality the D3X will be able to satisfy your photographic requirements. Unfortunately it has no video facility.
Nikon D3X: conclusion
This Nikon makes some sacrifices for its superlative image quality. Slower frames per second and no video option are the more obvious ones, but for a photographer who values image quality and good cameras, this is the best there is in this range. It has good high ISO/noise performance, even though it is not really designed for the low light extremes. It has an abundance of external controls, an intuitive menu structure and almost endless customization possibilities. The huge viewfinder is great for controlling metering and the superb autofocus system is very flexible and quick, especially when combined with Nikon’s AF-S lenses.
